They are arranged alphabetically, albeit with a sense of humor. Johnny is best known for creating Pictorial Webster’s Dictionary, using archived printing blocks that were used in the 1859 edition of Webster’s Dictionary, as well as sprinkling in a few of his own original images. ![]() We’re lucky enough to have astounding guest artists leading some of the sessions this year, including MASS MoCA artist Johnny Carrera, featured in the exhibition “Life’s Work,” opening April 6th. Symbolically, binding a book of your artwork can also bind you to your artistic aspirations. Throughout the week, participants will have the opportunities to try different methods of printmaking and bookbinding, while discussing how young people can plan for careers in the arts. Teens from the area are gearing up for yet another amazing TEENSPACE program, and this year’s focus is on print-making. He has exhibited his sculpture throughout the United Kingdom, including twice at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and in the United States, most recently at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Gallery 51 in North Adams.įor information, 41, extension 8131, or Carrera (photo from Pyramid Screenprinters) ![]() He now lives and works in southern Vermont. These drawings, along with Criddleâs huge figures, provoke the viewer to consider: are we looking at them or are we the object of scrutiny? Is the art looking at us?Ĭriddle is a British sculptor who moved to New England in 1996. In addition to sculptures of other people and characters, the exhibition includes collages, drawings and mixed-media self-portraits, which reveal the artistâs interest in how people experience themselves in the past and the present and in relationship to others. Their sculptural presence in the gallery resonates with collective and personal memories as well as the artistâs own. Criddle merges true stories of people from his memories with folklore stories to create hybrid figures â half-real, half-mythological. Many of the sculptures were inspired by real people who made a lasting impact on the artist, including his school teachers, a grumpy war veteran and a disabled child (at whom his mother told him it was rude to stare). He presents his autobiography in the form of oversized sculptures made from wood, bronze, fabricated steel and found objects including wooden blinds, furniture components, a furnace shovel and heavy-duty industrial hardware.Ĭriddleâs style of working produces vivid impressions of people from his past in this trip down memory lane. In a personal âarchaeological digââ into his childhood fears and stories, Criddle interprets his memories on a large-than-life scale. ![]() â Kidspace at Mass MoCA presents âItâs Rude to Stare,â featuring sculpture and drawings by English-born, Vermont-based artist Richard Criddle, on view through February 24.
